Monoswezi
With its members hailing from Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Norway, and Sweden, the collective known as Monoswezi creates a unique amalgam of African rhythms, jazz fusion, pop, and elements of both African and Scandinavian folk. Since debuting in 2013, the group has released four albums including 2021's sonically adventurous Shanu.
Norwegian musician Hallvard Godal (saxophone, clarinet) befriended percussionist and singer Calu Tsemane during a cultural exchange program in 2008. From this initial spark grew a surprising Afro-Nordic collaboration that included Zimbabwe's Hope Masike (vocals, mbira, percussion), Norway's Putte Johander (bass), and Sweden's Erik Nylander (drums). Combining the first letters from their countries of origin, they created the portmanteau Monoswezi (Mo = Mozambique, No = Norway, Swe = Sweden, Zi = Zimbabwe) and released their debut album, The Village, in 2013. The record introduced their global style, which combined instruments like the mbira and marimba with saxophone and jazz drums as well as the vocals of Masike and Tsemane. Monoswezi's beguiling mixture of styles justly earned them an international audience, and in addition to frequent tours, they issued the 2015 LP Monoswezi Yanga, followed in 2017 by A Je, both on Riverboat Records. As they headed into the next decade, the band continued to grow their sound, adding instruments like harmonium and synthesizers on 2021's eclectic Shanu.
