Jérôme Kuhn
Conductor Jérôme Kuhn has been active as an operatic, symphonic, and choral conductor, both in his native country and abroad. He has championed English-language works on the European continent.
Kuhn was born in Switzerland in 1983. He began his education on the piano, studying at the Haute-École de Musique de Lausanne-Fribourg; there, he won the school's contemporary music prize and earned a diploma in piano education. Switching to conducting, he studied with various teachers. For many years, he has taught music there and conducted the choir; he also founded (in 2011) and conducts the choir Le Canard Chipeau in Geneva, which has collaborated with L'Orchestre de Chambre de Genève. In 2010, Kuhn founded the Opéra Louise company in Fribourg (Freiburg), Switzerland; he remained its artistic director after its merger with the Nouvel Opéra Fribourg and continued to hold the position as of the early 2020s. In 2018, Kuhn made his recording debut, appearing on the album Les musiques du Puy du Fou.
Kuhn has been active as a guest conductor with ensembles both inside and outside Switzerland. These include the Academy of Ancient Music in London, the Orchestre de Chambre fribourgeois (Freiburg Chamber Orchestra), the Nouvel Ensemble Contemporain NEC de la Chaux-de-Fonds, and the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. Kuhn conducted the latter group during the 2012-2013 season and then (in 2013) co-founded the Prague Symphonic Ensemble; he has continued to lead that group as of the early 2020s. Kuhn's career as an opera conductor also expanded. He led the Parisian premieres of Thomas Adès' Powder Her Face and Gerald Barry's The Importance of Being Earnest, as well as Shostakovich's little-heard operetta Moscow, Cheryomushki; he also conducted the Swiss premiere of composer Marius Felix Lange's Snow White. In 2022, Kuhn served as music director for the album Libertad by Swiss rapper Stress. That same year, Kuhn conducted the choir La Maîtrise de Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens de Bulle on the Warner Classics label, issuing the holiday album Mon plus beau Noël.
