Jastin Martin

Understated and emotionally open ballads are the specialty of Houston-based contemporary R&B artist Jastin Martin. Active since the late 2010s, the singer/songwriter and and guitarist started independently with self-produced singles and EPs such as XVIII (2019) and Growing Pains (2021) before signing with Def Jam. Martin's output for the major label includes fresh versions of a couple previously released songs and the typically spare "Hurt Before" (2023), preludes to her more collaborative debut album. Martin learned to play numerous instruments and sang in choirs throughout her childhood. She started writing songs in her early teens, and not long after that began uploading covers and original material. Having taught herself to engineer and produce her recordings, she reached a wider online audience while attending Grambling State, and in 2019 released XVIII, her first commercial EP, and "Again," an early highlight. Increasingly prolific, Martin issued around 20 singles during 2020 and 2021, and capped the latter year with the Growing Pains EP, featuring "Houston," an aching and dismissive acoustic ballad. Additional singles arrived during the first half of 2022. That August, Martin offered her third EP, Mine, and subsequently landed a deal with Def Jam. The label first re-released Mine standout "Reassurance," followed in early 2023 by new versions of earlier compositions "Growing Pains" and "Right My Wrongs." The new song "Hurt Before," one of Martin's finer trap-styled slow jams, landed in April 2023. Meanwhile, she was preparing her debut full-length with assistance from other producers.
