Benediction

Benediction is a British death metal institution, one of the U.K.'s most enduring and intense extreme metal groups. The band helped establish the scene in the early 1990s alongside fellow decibel-crushing Birminghamites Napalm Death and Bolt Thrower, releasing seminal efforts like Subconscious Terror (1990), The Grand Leveller (1991), and Transcend the Rubicon (1993), which combined unrelenting riffage and nihilistic lyrics with guttural vocals. After a long period of personnel changes and stylistic detours, Benediction returned to reclaim the death metal mantle in the 2020s, issuing Scriptures (2020) and Ravage of Empires (2025) to considerable acclaim. Benediction formed in the late 1980s around a lineup of vocalist Barney Greenway, guitarists Peter Rewinski and Darren Brookes (the band's sole constant members), bassist Paul Adams, and drummer Ian Treacy. The group inked a deal with Nuclear Blast before releasing their debut long-player, 1990's raw and uncompromising Subconscious Terror. Greenway left the fold to join Napalm Death, setting the stage for vocalist Dave Ingram, who made his studio debut on 1991's The Grand Leveller. Frank Healy took over bass duties from Adams in 1992, the same year the band issued their third LP, Dark Is the Season, and Neil Hutton picked up the sticks after Treacy's departure in 1993, solidifying the core '90s lineup of Rewinsky, Brookes, Ingram, Healy, and Adams. A string of assured efforts followed -- Transcend the Rubicon (1993), The Dreams You Dread (1995), and Grind Bastard (1998) --showcasing the group's technical prowess and commitment to sonic carnage. Ingram left the group after the latter effort and briefly joined Bolt Thrower, appearing on the band's seventh album, Honour – Valour – Pride. Benediction conscripted Anaal Nathrakh vocalist Dave Hunt as his replacement, releasing the slick, more groove-oriented Organised Chaos in 2001 to little fanfare. 2008's Killing Music marked a return to the traditional death metal style of the group's earlier efforts, and was received much better than its predecessor. A long studio hiatus followed, with the band cycling through bassists and drummers while maintaining a steady live presence. Hunt's departure in 2018 resulted in the return of fan favorite Dave Ingram, who, alongside new drummer Giovanni Durst and bassist Dan Bate, helped make 2020's Scriptures one of the group's most acclaimed outings to date. Benediction kept the momentum going in 2025 with the release of their hard-hitting ninth long-player, Ravage of Empire, which saw the band welcome new bassist Nik Sampson.
