Mandy
Drawing influence from the noise and grunge-pop of acts like Sonic Youth and Veruca Salt as well as the bruised introspection of Elliott Smith, Mandy is the solo project of Melkbelly leader Miranda Winters. Recorded with a backing power trio, Mandy's debut album, Lawn Girl, appeared in 2024.
A singer and guitarist, Winters formed noise rock purveyors Melkbelly in Chicago in 2013 with brothers Bart and Liam Winters and drummer James Wetzel. They released two albums -- 2017's Nothing Valley and 2020's PITH -- before Winters gathered some older songs and newly penned material, some of which she'd already recorded on her own, for studio sessions with Taylor Hales at Electrical Audio. The sessions involved re-recording tracks with room mikes but with an eye to capturing the essence of earlier versions. To that end, she assembled a backing band consisting of guitarist Linda Sherman, bassist Lizz Smith, and drummer Wendy Zeldin for an album guided by themes of femininity, including motherhood, friendship, and what it means for the process of making art. Exploding in Sound released the resulting Lawn Girl LP in April 2024.
