VTSS

The unabashed and sonically creative sound of VTSS has been honed in her eclectic DJ sets and her ability to bend the often purist rules of the techno scene. From the EBM- and hardcore-referencing sound of her earlier productions to the IDM and breaks of her 2022 EP Projections, VTSS continues to break the mold of electronic music. Born and raised in Warsaw, Poland, VTSS (aka Martyna Maja) grew up on a diet of Aphex Twin and underage raves, soaking up the dance scene in the capital of her native Poland. Originally studying to become a lawyer, a visit in 2012 to the underground electronic music festival Unsound in Kraków, shifted the focus of her future aspirations, and she switched to studying sound engineering instead. Immersing herself in the Warsaw club scene, she worked her way through, playing everything from warm-up sets to all-nighters and back to manning the doors. Her relentless drive also extended to her DJ'ing, often pushing the boundaries of techno by incorporating elements of rave, electro, hardcore, and EBM into her sets. A move to Berlin saw her become a regular at some of the city's biggest club nights, including slots at the infamous Berghain, alongside producing for labels such as Intrepid Skin, Haven, and Repitch. With her diverse DJ sets much sought after, she started to play a raft of festivals while keeping one foot in the underground techno scene and collaborating with the likes of Randomer as Body Sushi, and working with techno provocateur Varg. As the COVID-19 pandemic hit clubs in early 2020, VTSS focused on her productions, but unable to play out, she started to reevaluate the sound she had been crafting. A move to East London in the summer of 2020, after she became disillusioned with the strict techno "rules" of Berlin, breathed fresh life into her work, while she also embraced the more open-minded club scene of the British capital. A handful of releases appeared in 2021, including the EP Borderline Tenderness, before she signed a deal with Ninja Tune offshoot Technicolour. The more experimental EP, Projections, appeared at the beginning of 2022, seeing VTSS embracing a heady mix of IDM, breaks, and bass.
