Seunghee Lee

Clarinetist Seunghee Lee has become popular in both Asia and the U.S., offering recordings featuring adventurous, unusual programming. Lee is also a musical entrepreneur, a lecturer, and a competitive golfer. Lee was born in Seoul. When she was nine, her parents immigrated to the U.S., where she grew up in a Chicago suburb. Lee attended the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, studying with Charles Neidich and receiving a bachelor's degree. She went on to the Yale School of Music on a full scholarship, studying with David Shifrin. Lee won several awards, including a first prize at the International Clarinet Association Competition, a co-winner nod at the Saint Louis Symphony Young Artist Competition, and recognition at the Yale Woolsey Hall Concerto Competition. In 1990, she was chosen as one of three clarinetists representing the U.S. in the American-Soviet Youth Orchestra. Lee served as the principal clarinetist of Korea's Bucheon Philharmonic from 1993 to 1995. Seeking greater creative freedom, she resigned that post. Lee appeared as a soloist with such groups as the Saint Louis Symphony, the Metropolitan Symphony of Minneapolis, the Jupiter Symphony of New York, and the Yale Philharmonia. She released her debut album, Brava, on the Summit Records label in 2000. Lee spent several years away from music, devoting them to motherhood and to her career as a professional golfer, in which she used the name Sunny Kang. Lee has lectured on similarities between golf and music, and she attained professionally competitive status in golf unusually quickly. She returned to music primarily as a recording artist, issuing the album Embrace on Summit in 2011. After self-issuing the album Hidden Treasures in 2013, she formed the Musica Solis label in 2016 and released the album Solace. She returned in 2022 with Aspire, a duo album with bandoneon player JP Jofre. Lee has spoken widely on musical entrepreneurship, appearing at such venues as the Harvard Business School and the 2019 Asia Business Conference.
