Mohri Fumika

Fumika Mohri is one of Japan's rising violinists, with a long list of appearances with orchestras in both Japan and the West, where she was partly trained. She made her recording debut in 2023 on the Naxos label. Mohri was born in Yokohama on April 20, 1994, and took up the violin at the age of three. She attended the Toho Gakuen School of Music in Tokyo, studying with Kaori Tajiri, Sachika Mizuno, and Koichiro Harada and receiving a soloist diploma in 2014. She won or placed well at major prize competitions, including the 2012 Seoul International Music Competition; there, she was the first Japanese winner. In 2015, Mohri took second prize at the Premio Paganini International Violin Competition and sixth prize at the Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition in Brussels. In 2019, she was a third-prize winner at the Montreal International Music Competition. On a trip to Vienna when she was 17, Mohri became fascinated by Greek mythology and hatched the idea of studying in Europe. In 2015, she enrolled at the Kronberg Academy near Frankfurt, Germany; she continued her studies there with Mihaela Martin into the early 2020s. Mohri has appeared as a soloist with major orchestras in Japan, Europe, and North America, including the Tokyo Symphony, Osaka Symphony, the Brussels Philharmonic, and Kremerata Baltica. She made her recital debut at Kioi Hall in Tokyo in 2016 and has maintained a strong recital career with such top-rank collaborators as pianists András Schiff and Abdel Rahman El Bacha, violinist Ilya Gringolts, and violist Tabea Zimmermann. She made appearances at the Kronberg Academy Festival in 2015, 2017, and 2019. Mohri made her debut on Naxos in 2023 with the Czech Chamber Orchestra Pardubice, performing the Violin Concertos Op. 2 and Op. 7 of Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges; released in the wake of the film Chevalier, the album made classical best-seller charts.
