Jonathan Ware
Pianist Jonathan Ware is best known as a vocal accompanist and chamber musician. After a promising beginning to his career in the U.S., he moved to Germany and has been in demand in Europe as both a performer and an educator.
Ware was born in Dallas, Texas. His mother was a pianist and his father a conductor, and when he was little, his parents announced that he would be having piano lessons every Thursday. Ware attended the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, earning a bachelor's degree and a performer's certificate, and went on to the Juilliard School in New York, where he received a master's degree. Ware performed concertos with the Dallas Symphony and the Mississippi Symphony, and he gave solo recitals in major U.S. cities and in Japan. In the late 2000s decade, Ware began to broaden his activities to lieder accompaniment and chamber music, and that change in his activities entailed an increase in the time he spent in Britain and continental Europe. Ware won a new round of prizes, including the Pianist's Award at the 2011 Wigmore Hall Song Competition in London, and the Pianist's Prize at the Das Lied Competition in Berlin two years later. He has appeared at prestigious venues such as the Aldeburgh Festival, the Pierre Boulez Saal in Berlin, and Wigmore Hall. Back in the U.S., Ware appeared at the Schubert & Co. event in New York, which presented the complete songs of Schubert in the 2012-2013 season. He has also been heard on radio stations WQXR (New York) and WRR (Dallas).
Ware has appeared as an accompanist on several recordings, including an album of songs by Schubert, Wolf, and Medtner with baritone Ludwig Mittelhammer in 2019, and soprano Elsa Dreisig's recital of songs by Strauss, Rachmaninov, and Duparc the following year. Ware teaches at the Hochschule "Hanns Eisler" and the Barenboim-Said Academy in Berlin. Away from the keyboard, he is an enthusiastic marathon runner.
