Eyes of Others

Melding heterogenous alternative dance music with a home-recorded aesthetic and dashes of wryness and whimsy, Eyes of Others is the recording alias of John Bryden. Often both catchy and uncompromising, his full-length debut, simply titled Eyes of Others, appeared in 2023. Based in Edinburgh, Scotland, Bryden, a multi-instrumentalist, spent two decades playing in a series of bands before deciding to try the solo route when he was well into his thirties. The decision was spurred by his realization that, when it came to the music he was making, compromise had long taken precedence over innovation. The freedom of expression this gave him led to experiments with combining everything from Krautrock and dub to folk-rock and psychedelic pop. Settling into a diverse but generally murky, dance-anchored sound, he debuted the Eyes of Others moniker with the Stimulus EP on local label Paradise Palms in late 2017. A submission to be considered for a radio show unexpectedly resulted in Andrew Weatherall offering to remix his song "I See You in the Shrubs." A three-track, 12" release of the song offering versions by Eyes of Others, Weatherall, and Donald Dust followed on Paradise Palms in mid-2018. Bryden met Heavenly Recordings founder Jeff Barrett at a gig around this time, and released one more single on Paradise Palms (2020's "Elephant") and a single for Global Warming Records (2021's "Elevenses") before signing with Heavenly in 2022. Eyes of Others' first release for the label, the October 2022 10" EP Bewitched by the Flames, quickly sold through its first pressing. The project's eponymous full-length debut followed in May of 2023. In typical Bryden fashion, it included songs inspired by everyday subject matter, from the maleffect of cheap deodorant to seeing the storied couch at Sigmund Freud's house and museum.
