Adam Eve
Known most for their Sonny & Cher-like 1966 single "They Can Look at Us and Laugh," Adam & Eve were a Germany-based pop singing duo that, at first, consisted of American expatriate Johnnie Christian Dee and Czechoslovakia-born Eva Bartova. Prior to forming, Dee wrote several songs recorded by the Pretty Things, including "Don't Bring Me Down." In 1969, he departed for London, England, where he was busted for running a prostitution ring with vocalist Janie Jones. Bartova continued with a second Adam, husband Hartmut Schairer, and Adam & Eve had a modest run as a schlager act through the early '80s. Bartova, a victim of cancer, passed away in 1989. Dee, who was imprisoned for stabbing a girlfriend in Germany and escaped, passed away in 2004.
