Jou Ouve, "Open Day" or Fat Tuesday of Mardi Gras, is another album in which Malavoi demonstrates its deft ability through different musical styles with amazing ease. Paulo Rosine was still fronting the group at the time, playing piano and providing the arrangements. The depth of his velvet vocal on the title track is astounding, and one wonders why he didn't sing more often. The song is about the joys of Carnival and celebrating life. It is a jewel of a track and is loaded with rhythmic sensuality. The sound quality is exceptional, with bass, guitar, and percussion coming through with a lot of punch and spark. "Philomene" is a shorter version of "La Filo," one of their signature songs. "Demarrage" is another bass-driven track with razor-like rhythm guitar that never gets tired. There are Cuban cha-chas here, too, that are very danceable, and they are styles of music unique to Martinique. Included here, too, is "La Case a Lucie," which was a very big seller in the Antilles. This is also a good introduction to the magic of Malavoi. Highly recommended.
