Liszt: 12 Études d'exécution transcendante, S. 139

Alim Beisembayev

Electronic - Released December 2, 2022 | Warner Classics

Hi-Res Booklet
The commonly used English title Transcendental Etudes fails to capture the flavor of the original French title, Études d'exécution transcendante ("Etudes of transcendental execution"). These are, despite all the fireworks, true etudes, concerned with specific technical issues, and they were dedicated to the master of the piano study, Carl Czerny. Young pianist Alim Beisembayev shows nerve in going up against the existing performances of these works, particularly the one by Igor Levit that appeared not long before, but Beisembayev offers confident readings that differ from those of the tempestuous Levit and stand up to others on the market. His strength is that his execution is indeed transcendental, with clean renditions of the finger-crunching pieces (sample Mazeppa, No. 4) that are relaxed enough for the pianist to suggest longer lines. There is a kind of warmth in his playing that flowers in full in the final D flat major piece from the Six Consolations, one of two short pieces that ring down the curtain from a compelling set of etudes. This release serves notice that Beisembayev, the winner of the 2021 Leeds Piano Competition and possessor of a following in both East (he is Kazakh) and West, is a talent to watch in the Russian-school virtuoso arena.© James Manheim /TiVo

Liszt: 12 Études d'exécution transcendante, S. 139

Haochen Zhang

Classical - Released July 28, 2023 | BIS

Hi-Res Booklet
This 2023 recording of Liszt's Transcendental Etudes by Haochen Zhang appeared close to another by Yunchan Lim, and the opportunity for comparison is irresistible, for both pianists were prize-winners at the Van Cliburn Competition in Texas. Listeners new to Liszt could profitably hear both and get a good idea of two approaches to Liszt. Lim is a storm-the-rafters pianist, trafficking in extremes, in great, violent waves of sound, while Zhang is a technician. The former accords more with the public image of the Romantic hero Liszt, but who knows what Liszt actually sounded like, especially inasmuch as the pianos of his time weren't capable of the volume of a modern instrument. Perhaps it was the rather unearthly precision demanded by the Feux follets ("will-o'-the-wisp") that wowed Liszt's audiences, and Zhang does these full justice. His Harmonies du soir ("Evening Harmonies") have numerous subtle shades, especially as captured here by BIS' studio sound engineering. Is his seventh etude, Eroica, really heroic? Maybe not, but that is not the only personality present in these works, which Liszt himself seems to have regarded from several different perspectives. This is, at any rate, an important entry in the Liszt discography.© James Manheim /TiVo

Franz Liszt: Études d'exécution transcendante

Gabriel Stern

Classical - Released March 25, 2022 | Mirare

Hi-Res Booklet
A major, iconic figure of the Romantic period, the inventor of the piano recital, Franz Liszt, with his twelve Transcendental Etudes, brought technical virtuosity up to a level never reached before him. Beyond technically challenging the performer, these flamboyant, evocative pages feed on the composer's observation of nature and readings. The fantastic dimension mingles with the idyllic, the epic borders on contemplation: such combined visions foreshadow the music of the future. © mirare

Stephen Hough's Dream Album: Piano Bonbons

Stephen Hough

Classical - Released June 1, 2018 | Hyperion

Hi-Res Booklet
British-Australian pianist Stephen Hough has been known for solid performances of mainstream repertory and to a degree for compositions of his own. He has championed a few lesser-known composers, and here he tries something completely different: a set of largely unknown miniatures, some of which are his own. They are dreamlike enough in that they are sequenced to evoke a set of images, and to avoid big strokes that break the mood. In itself, that's nothing you might not hear on a dozen crossover albums on Classic FM, but in Hough's hands the effect is unique and entrancing. For one thing, the program is personal; he explains in his own notes his connections to some of these works. For another, his transcriptions, arrangements, and original compositions are all carefully measured to contribute to the overall effect. They are often playful in mood, putting, for example, new rhythmic twists on familiar pieces (sample Matilda's Rhumba) that set them in contrast to the intensely nostalgic mood of pieces like Vasily Solovyov-Sedoy's Moscow Nights, a Soviet-era popular song transcribed for piano. And again, although these pieces aren't technically difficult for the most part, the way Hough controls them all and directs them toward a common goal is not easily accomplished. In a way, Stephen Hough's Dream Album is a throwback: a pianist of a hundred years ago might have combined existing miniatures with new transcriptions and arrangements in this way. But it's a throwback of the best kind; the sheer appeal of programs like this was lost under the weight of modernist ambitions. And it includes the crucial element of freshness: Hough's own contributions are not merely imitations of older music but reinterpretations of it. This is one of the loveliest release you're likely to hear this year, and it's backed by Hyperion's usual fine sound from the Wyastone Estate concert hall.© James Manheim /TiVo
