This 2023 recording of Liszt's Transcendental Etudes by Haochen Zhang appeared close to another by Yunchan Lim, and the opportunity for comparison is irresistible, for both pianists were prize-winners at the Van Cliburn Competition in Texas. Listeners new to Liszt could profitably hear both and get a good idea of two approaches to Liszt. Lim is a storm-the-rafters pianist, trafficking in extremes, in great, violent waves of sound, while Zhang is a technician. The former accords more with the public image of the Romantic hero Liszt, but who knows what Liszt actually sounded like, especially inasmuch as the pianos of his time weren't capable of the volume of a modern instrument. Perhaps it was the rather unearthly precision demanded by the Feux follets ("will-o'-the-wisp") that wowed Liszt's audiences, and Zhang does these full justice. His Harmonies du soir ("Evening Harmonies") have numerous subtle shades, especially as captured here by BIS' studio sound engineering. Is his seventh etude, Eroica, really heroic? Maybe not, but that is not the only personality present in these works, which Liszt himself seems to have regarded from several different perspectives. This is, at any rate, an important entry in the Liszt discography.
