Eclipse

Amadou & Mariam

World - Released December 9, 2022 | Because Music

Hi-Res
Eclipse is the experimental new album by Amadou & Mariam, the power couple of West African music. This album comprises a series of concerts, launched ten years ago and recorded in total darkness. This wasn’t done to save electricity but rather to share the performers’ experience of blindness. The spectators no longer focused on what they saw on the stage, just on what they could hear and feel; their ears wide open, sensitive to the atmosphere and the nuance of the music and the stories it tells. This very personal project is also conceived as an autobiographical tale, with a narrator who introduces the songs by recounting the important stages of Amadou & Mariam’s story. They met in 1975, at the Institute for Young Blind People in Bamako. They soon released their first songs in Mali but would eventually reach international fame and begin collaborating with rock stars. French rapper Oxmo Puccino has the honour of recounting Amadou & Mariam’s story in a sonic atmosphere which encapsulates the streets of Bamako. The songs performed by Amadou & Mariam follow the same chronology: from the acoustic modesty of the early days to their more recent danceable hits. The show itself featured admirable performances from producers, musicians and technicians who were obviously not accustomed to working in the dark. For the audience, both of that time and today, it’s a whole new sensory experience, immersed in the love and passions of Amadou & Mariam. Definitely worth listening to this one with your eyes closed, too. © Stéphane Deschamps/Qobuz

Brillez, astres nouveaux! (Airs d'opéra baroque français)

Chantal Santon-Jeffery

Classical - Released January 31, 2020 | Aparté

Hi-Res Booklet Distinctions 5 de Diapason
Chantal Santon-Jeffery and the Orfeo Orchestra, conducted by György Vashegyi, take us through a musical journey that leads straight to the French Enlightenments. Glorious time of the "sopranos légères", whose agile voices allowed all fantasies and ornaments, it’s during Louis the Beloved’s reign that French opera reaches new heights: the public hastens to every representation to delight in hearing the demoiselles vocalize with their brilliant voices. Chantal Santon-Jeffery pays tribute to these opera virtuosos with a beautiful recital that celebrates all the splendours of the repertoire, in association with the Centre de musique baroque de Versailles: with numerous unrecorded works, Chantal Santon-Jeffery brings this admirable singing back to life. © Aparté

Le Grand Jeu. French Baroque Organ Favourites (Collection "L'âge d'or de l'orgue français", No. 4)

Gaétan Jarry

Classical - Released August 28, 2020 | Château de Versailles Spectacles

Hi-Res Booklet
With this recording, Gaétan Jarry has created what can only be described as a self-portrait of the great Organ of the Royal Chapel of Versailles. The programme is devoted to the essential works of the French Baroque organ, including the dazzling Grand Dialogue en ut by Louis Marchand and the famous Récit de tierce en taille by Nicolas de Grigny. However, Gaétan Jarry has more than one trick up his sleeve. For the first recording made on this grandiose instrument built in 1710, which has been expertly restored to its original glory, he puts forward a repertoire that’s characteristic of the period with transcriptions of vocal pieces such as Le Sommeil d’Atys by Jean-Baptiste Lully and the well-known Contredanses des Boréades by Rameau (pieces which wouldn’t have been known in the 1800s, since Rameau’s last masterpiece was only performed again in Aix-en-Provence in 1982 after spending more than two centuries lost in oblivion). This album features a very personal choice of works, passing through England with Purcell and even Handel, always guided by the culture and personality of the organist. It really does justice to the powerful sonorities and timbres that were so typical of the Golden Age of the French organ.Inaugurated by François Couperin in 1711, this instrument (built by Clicquot) was placed above the altar to face the rostrum on which the royal family sat during mass. It only just survived the Revolution, and later underwent modifications that altered its original state. Cavaillé-Coll transformed it into an instrument typical of the romantic period in 1872, and then organ builder Victor Gonzales converted it into a neo-classical organ in the 1930s. In 1989, it was completely dismantled and scrupulously restored by Jean-Loup Boisseau and Bertrand Cattiaux who returned it to its original appearance and sound. © François Hudry/Qobuz

Variations Goldberg - Aria variata - Concerto italien - Ouverture dans le style français

Rosalyn Tureck

Classical - Released February 4, 2008 | Warner Classics

"Poetry, scripture -- and science." These are words that close Rob Cowan's insightful and affectionate notes to this re-release of pianist Rosalyn Tureck's EMI Bach recordings. And how appropriate these words are. Aside from the immensely slow tempos, the most striking aspects of Tureck's Bach are her beauty of tone, her reverential interpretations, and her clarity of articulation. In both her 1957 recording of Bach's Goldberg Variations, BWV 988, and her 1959 recordings of his Aria variata in A minor, BWV 989; Italian Concerto in F major, BWV 971; and Overture in the French Style in B minor, BWV 831, one hears everything in the score played with consummate poise and balance as well as devotional intensity. To triangulate on Tureck's highly individualistic style, imagine Glenn Gould's lucidity, Wilhelm Kempff's probity, and Edwin Fischer's severity fused with a wholly personal spirituality. Though not for everyone -- those who come to Bach looking for a good time are advised to steer clear -- anyone who values the luminous and the numinous above the quick and the crisp should at least hear Tureck's Bach. Though EMI's monaural and stereo sound is a bit dim and dull, it is still honest and true.© TiVo

Noël: Les plus beaux chants traditionnels français

Chours d'Enfants Da Capo

Classical - Released January 1, 2002 | Pavane Records

As lovely as much of the music is, it's hard to recommend Noël: Chants traditionnels français, sung by Choeurs d'Enfants Da Capo, without reservation. The primary problem is with the acoustic; on most of the tracks there's a very low hum that's frequently loud enough to be a serious distraction and it's an aural relief when it goes away in the brief pauses between tracks. Another consideration is whether or not the listener finds the instrumentation of the accompaniment -- organ, flute, and accordion -- charmingly quirky or in dubious taste. The songs chosen are among the best-known French carols, including a few international favorites like Silent Night (Douce Nuit). The young singers are talented amateurs, but this is not a children's choir of the first rank; this especially apparent in the solos. Again, this fact may or may not be a deterrent to listeners; it's easy to be charmed by the innocence and artlessness of the performers, but fans of absolutely pure tone and impeccable intonation may not find this CD to their liking. Apart from the issue of sound quality, the artistic considerations of the performance will determine whether or not a particular listener will be pleased with this collection. © TiVo
