La Caballé a trente-trois ans lorsqu'elle grave cette version mythique aux côtés d’un Carlo Bergonzi radieux et d’un Sherill Milnes à ses débuts. Le moelleux de son timbre, son incarnation du rôle, ses sons filés sublimes (L'"Addio del passato", [CD 2 plage 11, de votre lecture sur Qobuz] sans les coupures habituelles sont beaux à pleurer). Avec la jeune Caballé, l'émotion naît du souffle et de la simplicité de la ligne héritée de la tradition belcantiste. Mais sa longue carrière nous réserve bien d’autres surprises. Née dans un milieu très modeste et très croyant de Barcelone (son prénom provient de la fameuse Vierge Noire de Montserrat, patronne de la Catalogne), elle est vite remarquée au sein du Conservatoire de la ville où sa précocité étonne et ravi. C’est à Bâle, où elle sert de doublure durant deux longues saisons en attendant son heure, qu’elle s’impose du jour au lendemain, remplaçant une collègue défaillante. La suite est bien connue. La Caballé enchaîne les succès et les incarnations les plus diverses. En 1965, sa Lucrezia Borgia de Donizetti met le feu aux poudres au Carnegie Hall de New York, lorsqu’elle remplace au débotté la grande Marilyn Horne. Grâce à sa prudence et sa technique vocale exceptionnelle, Montserrat Caballé a chanté sur toutes les grandes scènes du monde, incarnant les princesses et les reines avec un succès jamais démenti. Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti, Spontini, Verdi, Puccini, mais aussi, Mozart, Gounod et Massenet sont ses compositeurs fétiches que le monde entier s’arrache. A la fin de sa carrière, elle fera même une incursion dans le répertoire wagnérien. Alors que la mode commençait à rechercher des cantatrices sveltes, désincarnées et ayant l’âge de leur rôle, son physique imposant aurait pu la reléguer loin de la scène, mais c’était sans compter sur sa présence vocale qui s’imposait à tous. Sa carrière discographique est immense et couvre la totalité de son répertoire. Sa voix commençant à se transformer au début des années 80, Montserrat Caballé accentue le côté dramatique et théâtral de ses personnages et diversifie son répertoire, n’hésitant pas à se confronter au crossover, notamment avec Freddie Mercury. Elle s’amuse aussi beaucoup sur scène en incarnant une désopilante Madama Cortese, dans le Voyage à Reims, de Rossini, sous la direction de Claudio Abbado, une production du Festival de Pesaro demeurée célèbre. En dépit d’une santé chancelante dès sa jeunesse et d’une perpétuelle angoisse due au trac qui furent la cause de nombreuses annulations, Montserrat Caballé a tout de même réussi une des plus belles carrières du XXe siècle. On la retrouve, intacte, au disque avec des petits miracles comme dans l’enregistrement de Turandot sous la direction de Zubin Mehta, où elle est une Liù extrêmement fragile et émouvante. Norma, bien sûr, mais aussi cette Giovanna d’Arco, ouvrage peu connu de Verdi sous la direction électrique de James Levine. Son surnom de « Reine du belcanto » n’est donc nullement usurpé. Montserrat Caballé nous a quittés le 6 octobre 2018, à Barcelone, laissant ses admirateurs orphelins, mais le disque gardera à jamais sa voix exceptionnelle. François Hudry octobre 2010
