Zubin Mehta fut directeur musical du New York Philharmonic de 1978 à 1991, et à ce jour aucun chef n’avait occupé ce poste aussi longtemps. Et c’est dès le tout début de sa résidence new-yorkaise, dès 1978 donc, qu’il décida d’enregistrer l’intégrale des Symphonies et Concertos de Brahms – piano, violon, double –, complétée par les indispensables Variations sur un thème de Haydn. Entre fougue romantique et précision analytique moderne, le chef mène l’Orchestre Philharmonique de New York vers de nouveaux sommets. Les collègues qu’il rassemble pour les concertos ne sont eux-mêmes pas les derniers venus, puisqu’il s’agit de Daniel Barenboim, Isaac Stern pour le concerto pour violon, Pinchas Zukerman et Lynn Harrell pour le double concerto ! Pour réaliser cet album, le label a pris soin de rassembler toutes les matrices originales et de les faire remastériser avec les tout dernières technologies ; sonorité somptueuse garantie. Enregistrements réalisés à New York le 20 septembre 1982, Avery Fischer Hall (Symphonie n° 1) ; le 15 janvier 1979, Manhattan Center (Symphonie n° 2) ; le 30 septembre 1981, Avery Fischer Hall (Symphonie n° 3 et Variations sur un thème de Haydn) : en novembre 1979, Avery Fischer Hall (Symphonie n° 4) ; en février 1979, Avery Fischer Hall (Concertos pour piano) ; le 16 octobre 1978, Manhattan Center (Concerto pour violon) ; en avril et août 1980, Avery Fischer Hall (Double concerto et Ouverture pour une fête académique). © SM/Qobuz
