Avec Kaleidoscope Dream en 2012 et surtout le grandiose Wildheart en 2015, Miguel Jontel Pimentel alias Miguel tout court déboulait dans la cour des grands. Son alliage de soul, de funk soft teinté de rock voire d’electro propulsait le Californien aux côtés de Frank Ocean, Prince voire Marvin Gaye… Cette fois, le Californien s’avère plus langoureux que jamais pour un opus plus homogène et sensuel qu’à l’accoutumée. Sexy aussi comme sur Pineapple Skies pour lequel il emprunte la mélodie de Sexual Healing de Marvin Gaye justement. Les featurings de Rick Ross sur Criminal, Travis Scott sur Sky Walker et J. Cole sur Come Through And Chill rendent l’affaire encore plus alléchante. Mais la vraie surprise du disque est sans doute l’engagement de Miguel. Né d’un père mexicain et d’une mère afro-américaine, le métisse tire ici quelques flèches sur la présidence Trump qui bâillonne ce qu’il représente. War & Leisure n’est pas pour autant son What’s Going On mais Miguel se devait de l’ouvrir dans un tel contexte, même si sa musique est habituellement synonyme de luxure, d’évanescence, de sexe et de décadence. Un quatrième album qui offre le parfait équilibre entre une soul grand public et un groove plus underground. © MD/Qobuz
