Premier album entièrement instrumental des Beastie Boys, The Mix-Up, sorti en 2007, se complaît dans le soul-jazz, un son dans lequel ils creusent depuis Check Your Head, lorsqu'ils avaient commencé à pimenter leurs albums et leurs faces B d'impros funk vaporeuses. Dans cette fusion de sons (orgues placides, guitares élastiques, lignes de basse bondissantes, rythmes chaloupés), tous les éléments n'en forment qu'un, dans le style inimitable indéniablement Beastie Boys, même s'ils ne prononcent pas un mot. S'ils sont davantage dans le ressenti que dans la sophistication instrumentale, ils ne s'en sont pas moins affinés en tant que musiciens et nous offrent des grooves plus denses et bien affirmés où se mêlent toutes les influences qui les fascinent : funk, dub, soul et rythmes latins. The Mix-Up n'est pas une œuvre d'art, mais il est tout aussi personnel et idiosyncrasique que les albums de soul-jazz funky que l'on peut dénicher dans les magasins d'occasions.
