Sur les quelque trente-six sonates pour violon et basse continue de Telemann qui nous sont parvenues, en voici huit ; ou plutôt, sept sonates et une fantaisie. Trente-six, c’est bien peu en comparaison, par exemple, des plus de deux mille cantates qu’on lui connaît, preuve sans doute qu’il les cisela pour des occasions spécifiques et pas pour le train-train de la messe. Chose étonnante, le violoniste Boris Begelman réussit à nous proposer quatre premières discographiques mondiales sur les huit ouvrages ici enregistrés, comme quoi Telemann reste encore une malle aux trésors. Le compositeur se montre ici orfèvre accompli de la matière et des couleurs, sachant mêler les genres « à l’ancienne », hérités de la suite et de la sonate d’église baroque (lent-rapide-lent-rapide), et les nouvelles formes en émergence en cette première moitié de XVIIIe siècle, qui se libèrent lentement des ornières et des carcans. Begelman fait appel à tous les artifices d’ornementation instrumentale en vogue à cette époque, pour un langage fleuri et bourré de surprises stylistiques. © SM/Qobuz
