À l’écoute de ses deux premiers albums, on aurait pu croire que Robert Finley était le fils de Solomon Burke, Al Green ou Otis Redding. Ou au moins leur petit frère, plus jeune d’une quinzaine d’années, mais doté d’une exceptionnelle voix de soulman à l’ancienne. Juste arrivé sur le tard, comme d’autres avant lui (Charles Bradley par exemple), sortant son premier album en 2016 à 62 ans après une vie de chanteur amateur et d’homme à temps complet. Robert Finley était donc le fils du métayer, clame le titre de ce troisième album, qui rappelle ses origines rurales et modestes aussi sûrement qu’un vieux chapeau de cowboy ou une liquette rentrée dans le jean. Un gars du vieux sud, celui de la ségrégation et de la pauvreté, dont les stigmates restent en travers de la gorge et s’évadent sublimés par le chant. Âgé maintenant de 67 ans, Finley continue de chanter comme un vieil ange buriné, dont le gardien s’appelle Dan Auerbach. C’est lui, le guitariste et chanteur des Black Keys, déjà aux manettes de son précédent album de 2017, Goin' Platinum!, qui a réalisé Sharecropper’s Son et réuni les musiciens. Et cet album, c’est du solide, de l’enraciné, du roboratif, de la tranche de vie façon soul food qui cale l’estomac et calme les angoisses. Robert Finley ne chante que deux choses : son histoire, et ses espoirs. Et ça rime, ça fait des chansons, mises en musique façon Memphis 68, avec cuivres, guitares qui transpirent le blues, basse profonde comme le bayou et mid tempos lascifs.
