Quel rapport entre le dernier album d’Indochine et son contemporain, le deuxième de Flo Rida ? Une reprise de « You Spin Me Round », hit sans lendemain commis en 1985 par Dead or Alive ! Le rappeur de Carol City, en Floride donc, partage aussi avec le combo rock parisien un sens accru de la mélodie qui fait mouche. Après un Mail on Sunday, en 2008, qui lui valut nombre de hits radio et des ventes confortables (même si l’on reste loin, désormais, des disques d’or décrochés en quelques jours, crise du disque oblige), il remet le couvert avec cet opus calibré une fois encore pour les pistes des clubs et les ondes.
D’ailleurs « Right Round » (celui avec le sample évident de « Spin Me Round », comme quoi les vieilles recettes…) a battu un record en passant en une semaine de la 58ème à la première place des charts américains. Une place squattée durant six semaines, et lui valant un autre record, celui des ventes de singles en digital. Flo Rida est donc bien armé pour attaquer le marché avec les armes appropriées : une production efficace assumée par will.i.am, Dr Luke (Lily Allen), des invités de poids (Nelly Furtado, Wyclef Jean, Ne-Yo, Akon…), et des lyrics qui relatent son quotidien et ses commentaires sur la route qui mène au sommet (le nom de l’album est l’acronyme Route Of Overcoming The Struggle). R.O.O.T.S. n’abuse qu’à peine des clichés du rap sudiste, refrains simplistes, abus d’autotune, beats décharnés, flow de supporter d’équipe de football américain, ce genre… Mais on est bien sûr loin du rap essentiel d’un Nas ou d’un Jay-Z.
On sent derrière cet étalage de « hooks » le souci de vendre en masse des ringtones, ces sonneries de téléphone dont le téléchargement assure une rente dorénavant supérieure aux royalties pour les artistes de cet acabit. Alors on construit un titre sur la scie eurobeat « Blue (Da Ba Dee) », et soudain, on a un peu honte. À moins de considérer cette oeuvre comme rien d’autre qu’un agrégat de musique d’autoradio pour soirées chaudes.
