The original Broadway cast recordings from the 1943 musical Oklahoma! passed into the public domain in Europe as of 1995, and several British labels have pressed up their own unlicensed versions of it. Naxos takes a more scholarly approach than some of the others. Like their competitors, they have used old records as the source for remastering, but they have looked for what producer David Lennick calls "quiet 78 pressings," and then done some sonic restoration work. That's still not what the owners of the original master recordings can do, but the sound is good. The 15 tracks that date from the original 1943 album and its 1944 sequel are augmented by an 11-minute symphonic suite of the music played by Alfred Wallenstein and the Philharmonic Orchestra of Los Angeles, plus five songs recorded for an album by bandleader Al Goodman using opera singers James Melton, Eleanor Steber, and John Charles Thomas. Filling the CD out to a generous 78 minutes, these tracks give a good sense of the ways in which the music was treated contemporaneously with the original production on Broadway.
