L’album par lequel le scandale est arrivé. Octavarium créa la polémique à sa sortie. Génie ou plagiat ? Car s’il s’avère comparativement l’album le moins « progressif » de Dream Theater, allant même chercher son inspiration du côté de U2 ou The Beatles, il n’en contient pas pour autant quelques fulgurances comme « The Root Of All Evil » ou « Octavarium » (encore un morceau découpé par thématiques, d’ailleurs).
Très copiés sur le style de Yes (au point que certains articles de la presse de l’époque parlèrent de plagiait), Octavarium représente l’Alpha et l’Omega d’un groupe qui se cherche encore une identité. Bien que plus construit que les précédents albums de Dream Theater et en dépit d’innombrables qualités, l'album sent le tâtonnement permanent et l’hésitation constante entre le heavy et le metal progressif.
Hésitation d’autant plus notable que le groupe faillit alors splitter faute d’une inspiration commune. Et pourtant, l’album s’avéra être l’un des plus gros hits de Dream Theater, confirmant par là même l’étrangeté de ce groupe jonglant décidemment entre les identités musicales.
