Grande prêtresse du monde impitoyable des réseaux sociaux, Cardi B s’est créé une identité indestructible à grands coups de strip clubs et de télé-réalité. Véritable tornade au parler franc, elle tire profit de cette notoriété en mettant toute son énergie dans sa passion : la musique, le rap. Et là arrive un petit miracle, Bodak Yellow. En un morceau emprunté au rappeur Kodak Black, elle résume tout son bagout du Bronx, son énergie débordée et sa sincérité extrême. Choisissant une ligne plus dure à la Remy Ma ou Gangsta Boo, Cardi B s’affirme sans partir vers la pop de Nicki Minaj. Elle est alors propulsée comme une nouvelle voie originale au succès fulgurant mais aussi aux nombreuses inconnues.
Sur Invasion of Privacy, Cardi B décline toutes ses qualités en standards du moment. Chaque case du cahier des charges est cochée, de la formule club de DJ Mustard avec YG au minimalisme motivant en compagnie des Migos. Certains choix sont moins évidents comme cette ballade avec l’inclassable Kehlani, ce sourire solaire avec Chance The Rapper ou encore cet hymne provocateur à la liberté féminine avec la rebelle SZA. Tous les invités sont bien choisis, présentant Cardi B sous différents angles avec des ambiances très éclectiques jusqu’au rayonnant latino I Like It. Mais c’est encore sur ses prestations en solo que la rappeuse est la plus convaincante entre Get Up 10, introduction technique et poignante à la Meek Mill et Bickenhead, reprise triomphale et féministe d’un classique de Project Pat.
Sur chaque interprétation, la rappeuse est habitée, parfois outrancière mais toujours superarticulée, justement expressive. Son accent latin développe ainsi une rythmique atypique et originale. Chaque défaut de prononciation est utilisé comme une arme musicale dans toute sorte de situation. Cardi B se sert de son identité à multiples étiquettes pour tenter des jeux de mots et autres rimes internes élaborées qui la rendent encore plus énigmatique. Invasion of Privacy ressemble à un véritable livre ouvert avec quelques pages déchirées, une invitation à en savoir plus alors qu’on en connaît déjà trop. Toujours en équilibre entre calcul et véracité, Cardi B passe avec mention le cap compliqué du premier album. Elle y renforce encore la proximité avec son public par quelques gestes de folie et une écriture sans filtre.
