Issue de la foire aux prétendantes d'un marché anglais en pleine ébullition, Ellie Goulding fut rangée dans la catégorie des chanteuses electro-pop avec son premier album Lights qui connut une double carrière avec l'ajout de six titres dont sa reprise de « Your Song », numéro deux des deux côtés de l'Atlantique.
Aujourd'hui, la fille de caissière propulsée multi-instrumentiste et compositrice à succès dévoile d'autres atouts qui pourrait bien en faire la nouvelle coqueluche britannique, quelque part entre Adele et Florence & The Machine. Ce deuxième album Halcyon (« martin-chasseur »), enregistré avec son producteur Jim Eliot dans une grange réhabilitée, s'éloigne de l'electro-pop glacée de Lights pour s'ouvrir à un univers plus profond et personnel, signalé par des changements d'atmosphères et de textures.
De l'éclosion de « Don't Say A Word » dans une ambiance brumeuse au tube « Anything Could Happen », marche electro emportée par une vague soul, il y a un monde parfaitement rendu par une production homogène. Si la chrysalide n'est pas encore totalement opérée et que certains tics demeurent (« Only You »), ce deuxième essai montre la voie que pourrait emprunter Ellie Goulding quand elle s'attaque à une ballade au piano immaculée comme « I Know You Care ».
Halcyon est encore trop prudent pour faire le grand saut dans la pop classique et encombré de formules electro répétitives mais les ressources vocales déployées par son auteur et son sens de la composition sont plutôt engageants.
