After scoring a Canadian hit with the catchy angst pop of "Today I Hate Everyone," and a Juno award for Best New Group, the Killjoys decide to stick to their proven power pop formula for their sophomore effort, Gimme Five. Lead vocalist Mike Trebilcock is clearly in control here, credited with writing 10 of the 13 tracks (and co-writing another). While songs like "Rave and Drool," "Sick of You," and "Look Like Me" became hits in Canada, Gimme Five has a "been there, done that" feel to it, showing very little growth in relation to their debut. Ironically, it is a 50-second song snippet called "Space Girl" (written by drummer Gene Champagne) that shows the most promise on this release, an indicator, perhaps, of what may have been if the band had been willing to take a few more creative risks.
