Recorded with his vigorous, youthful septet, Fire and Love proves that Jackie McLean hasn't lost any of his fire. The program of all original material gives McLean and his band -- René McLean (tenor saxophone, percussion), Raymond Williams (trumpet, flugelhorn), Steve Davis (trombone), Alan Palmer (piano), Phil Bowler (bass), Eric McPherson (drums) -- the room to stretch out and venture into some risky territory. As with any latter-day McLean album, the music is advanced hard bop played with skill and passion and it is well worth investigating. [The American and European issues of Fire and Love contain two songs that were not included on the original Japanese pressing.]
