Si la photo d’Alfred Deller trône à 100% sur la couverture, le célèbre contreténor britannique ne chante que dans vingt des quarante-trois pistes. On est ici en 1977, Deller (il ne lui reste alors que deux ans à vivre…) affiche soixante-cinq printemps et il sait merveilleusement sauvegarder sa voix ; aucun éclat, beaucoup de murmure, on aurait presque l’impression d’entendre parfois un crooner Renaissance nous égrener les merveilles de Dowland. Les vingt-trois autres pistes offrent des pièces, toujours de Dowland, pour luth solo – joué par Robert Spencer, l’un des membres principaux du fameux Deller Consort – ou pour ensemble, que joue ici le non moins célèbre Consort of Six rassemblant violons, violes, flûte et luth ou cistre.
