La discographie de John Lee Hooker est un labyrinthe. Pendant plus de dix ans (de 1948 au début des années 60), le bluesman a enregistré, toujours en solo, des centaines de morceaux pour des labels différents et sous une poignée de noms. Un boogie blues unique, magnétique, décharné, erratique et érotique, hors des structures conventionnelles du blues, à la fois archaïque et avant-gardiste, à la limite de l'improvisation et au cœur de la créativité pure. Et puis en 1961, avec Boom Boom, tout s'est révélé, le labyrinthe est devenu une danse, une évidence.
La version originale de ce morceau, le tube ultime de John Lee Hooker et un des totems du blues moderne, ouvre l'album Burnin'. Pour la première fois, John Lee Hooker enregistrait avec un groupe, des membres des Funk Brothers, les musiciens maison du label Motown. Des gars enfin capables de suivre l'inspiration sauvage de John Lee Hooker, ou de la canaliser. Imparable danse de boxeur, hachée et emballante à la fois, Boom Boom est devenu ce que l'on sait, la matrice du rhythm'n'blues anglais (des Animals à Dr. Feelgood, tous l'ont repris), la fondation de la grange de ZZ Top, la bande-son du retour de John Lee Hooker dans le film The Blues Brothers en 1980… Bref, un nouveau départ pour le blues électrique, qui ne s'en est toujours pas remis. Réédité pour les 60 ans de sa sortie, Burnin' ne se résume pas à Boom Boom, il enfile des morceaux groovy et sexy qui ont fait entrer le bluesman dans l'ère du rock'n'roll.
