Quitte à nous répéter (mais on ne risque pas trop grand’chose à bien répéter, dans le milieu musical…), l’on n’est pas toujours aussi bien servi que par soi-même : nombre de compositeurs sont d’exécrables chefs d’orchestre lorsqu’il s’agit de donner leurs propres œuvres. Ce n’est certes pas le cas de Benjamin Britten qui sut merveilleusement diriger sa musique – ainsi que celle des autres, d’ailleurs. Pour la Discothèque idéale, il nous a semblé indispensable qu’y figure l’enregistrement réalisé par Britten en personne de son premier opéra, Peter Grimes, non pas dans la foulée de la création mondiale (assurée en 1945 par Reginald Goodall), mais en 1958 avec une distribution légèrement différente, même si le rôle principal reste chanté par Peter Pears. L’ouvrage avance sans pitié, dans un lyrisme exacerbé et une certaine âpreté orchestrale parfaitement en osmose avec le livret et le contenu orchestral, les rôles féminins ne tombent pas dans le mièvre ou le belcantisant, et le chœur – un véritable personnage à part entière – se donne entièrement, avec passion et fougue. Ajout indispensable à l’Idéale Discothèque qobuzienne. (SM)

Chronique

Quitte à nous répéter (mais on ne risque pas trop grand’chose à bien répéter, dans le milieu musical…), l’on n’est pas toujours aussi bien servi que par soi-même : nombre de compositeurs sont d’exécrables chefs d’orchestre lorsqu’il s’agit de donner leurs propres œuvres. Ce n’est certes pas le cas de Benjamin Britten qui sut merveilleusement diriger sa musique – ainsi que celle des autres, d’ailleurs. Pour la Discothèque idéale, il nous a semblé indispensable qu’y figure l’enregistrement réalisé par Britten en personne de son premier opéra, Peter Grimes, non pas dans la foulée de la création mondiale (assurée en 1945 par Reginald Goodall), mais en 1958 avec une distribution légèrement différente, même si le rôle principal reste chanté par Peter Pears. L’ouvrage avance sans pitié, dans un lyrisme exacerbé et une certaine âpreté orchestrale parfaitement en osmose avec le livret et le contenu orchestral, les rôles féminins ne tombent pas dans le mièvre ou le belcantisant, et le chœur – un véritable personnage à part entière – se donne entièrement, avec passion et fougue. Ajout indispensable à l’Idéale Discothèque qobuzienne. (SM)
