Malgré les efforts colossaux de Brian Johnson derrière le micro de la formation australienne depuis bientôt quarante ans (en faisant l’impasse sur la période floue au cours de laquelle il s’est fait mettre à la porte, sur la fin de la tournée Rock or Bust), les fans hardcore, ceux du canal historique, et de nombreux autres, continueront de clamer que le chanteur le plus emblématique d’AC/DC restera à jamais Bon Scott. C’est avant tout pour eux qu’est sorti Bonfire, objet particulier s’il en est, qui ressemble plus à un hommage au frontman disparu tragiquement en 1980 qu’à une vraie compilation du combo mené par Angus Young. Plus qu’une anthologie, le coffret est surtout le témoin d’une époque bénie. La majeure partie des titres sont des versions live (qui prennent trois disques sur les cinq proposés) enregistrées d’une part lors de sessions spéciales (Live From the Atlantic Studios) en 1977, et de l’autre au cours du concert filmé au Pavillon de Paris en 1979 pour donner naissance au film Let There Be Rock.
Les raretés incarnées par des démos de certains classiques du groupe sont disponibles sur le volume nommé Volts, aux côtés de deux live et d’un titre tiré de TNT, album sorti uniquement en Australie en 1975. Un tel héritage ne peut mener qu’à une conclusion aussi logique qu’implacable : Bon Scott, c’était quand même quelque chose, un truc magique, une énorme dose de fun et de rock’n’roll mâtinés d’une subtile décadence aussi magnétique que nécessaire qui faisait tout le charme du personnage. Voir apparaître Back in Black dans ce coffret en guise de cinquième disque pourrait sembler déplacé. Mais ce qui restera à jamais le plus gros succès commercial du groupe est aussi le plus beau des adieux, sorte de faire-part électrique qui rend hommage à son ancien chanteur de la plus belle des manières à travers des chansons devenues des classiques incontournables.
