Plus obscur que ses prédécesseurs, Because of the Times signe une mutation radicale des Kings of Leon. Aux barbes, cheveux longs et pantalons pattes d’éléphant des deux premiers albums, les quatre garçons, rasés de près, préfèrent désormais les tignasses savamment coiffées et les slims moulants. Et le changement n’est pas que physique.
Largement influencés par leur tournée des stades aux côtés de U2, les Followill sonnent fort, très fort, et renvoie violemment les gentilles mélodies de Youth and Young Manhood et de Aha Shake Heartbreak au placard.
Tendu, surpuissant et bourré de testostérone, Because of the Times sent le whisky et la sueur, et réunit guitares tranchantes, batterie rutilante et ligne de basse impeccablement tenue par le jeune et talentueux benjamin de la fratrie. Et il n’y a qu’à écouter les invincibles « Knocked Up », « Charmer », « Black Thumbnail » ou « My Party » pour voir la machine de guerre Followill avancer et tout écraser sur son passage.
S’il laisse peu de place au doute, et donc aux lamentations, Because of the Times renferme pourtant quelques belles perles comme « Fans », proche des titres du second album, et « Arizona ». Consécration pour les uns, tournant décisif pour les autres, le troisième album de la fratrie de Nashville voit les Kings of Leon définitivement quitter leur Sud natal pour les stades du monde entier. Et entrer, par la même occasion, au panthéon des plus grands groupes de rock actuel.
