Mené par le chanteur Brent Smith (fondateur du groupe en 2001) et le guitariste Zach Myers (arrivé en 2008), Shinedown compte un autre membre éminent en la personne du bassiste Eric Bass, devenu au fil des ans le principal compositeur du quatuor, comme en témoigne ce sixième album Attention Attention, dont il signe les quatorze titres, mais également la production.
Écrit au retour d'une tournée européenne avec Iron Maiden, Attention Attention est un album conceptuel traitant du combat intérieur d'un individu pour transformer et transcender ses instincts négatifs et devenir une autre personne, ouverte et positive. C'est une première du genre pour Shinedown qui bénéficie depuis son troisième album The Sound of Madness (2008, coïncidant avec l'engagement d'Eric Bass), d'un succès constant dans les classements américains.
Orné d'une pochette symbolique (un point d'exclamation sur fond jaune traité de façon artistique), ce recueil s'accompagne de deux extraits puissants, « Devil » et « The Human Radio », à la hauteur des ambitions radiophoniques d'un groupe qui s'approche vers les grands noms du rock, avec son propre style hérité du hard rock et du grunge. D'autres titres comme « Black Soul » ou « Pryo » vont dans la même direction généraliste, remaniant la façon de composer en comparaison des débuts laborieux en la matière (cf. Leave a Whisper, 2003 et Us and Them, 2005).
C'est donc une formation régénérée qui aborde son meilleur album, direct et efficace, à l'instar des riffs, soli, breaks et autres trouvailles mélodiques ou sonores glissés dans des titres comme « Black Soul » ou « Darkside », qui se pare même du système Auto-Tune. Quant aux amateurs de la première heure, qui appréciaient le côté hard rock à l'ancienne de Shinedown, ceux-ci trouveront leur compte dans « Monsters » et « Creatures », plus proches que « Attention Attention » et « Special » de la première manière, sans perdre en consistance.
