About Playlist
Steve Winwood formed Traffic in 1967 with his Birmingham friends Jim Capaldi (drummer), Chris Wood (flute and sax) and Dave Mason (guitar), bringing to an end the Spencer Davis Group with whom he had enjoyed success with the hit "Gimme Some Loving". Following in the footsteps of Cream and Jethro Tull in the same period, Traffic embarked on a more complex, more musically elaborate rock, which would eventually lead to progressive rock a few years later, with bands like Yes and Genesis. Traffic, on the other hand, tended to tread the waters of jazz rock and folk, and didn't hesitate to produce songs blithely exceeding 7 minutes in length. Traffic went through a number of line-up changes, with Winwood, Wood and Capaldi always on board. At the end of their career as a band, they were joined by Ric Grech, David Hood, Roger Hawkins and Rebop Kwaku Baah (future member of Can).
