Bear Family's second CD featuring songs by R&B vocalist Varetta Dillard empties their vaults with a mix of comical novelty tunes, hard-hitting tracks, and heartache numbers. Dillard moves from the hip silliness of the title track and "Mercy Mr. Percy" to the anguished "What Can I Say" and "A Little Bitty Tear." She's also outstanding on "Scorched," "You Ain't Foolin' Nobody," and "Rules of Love." The disc's 22 tracks offer a portrait of a fine vocalist who consistently sang with vigor and depth, regardless of a number's lyrical quality.
