Conductor JoAnn Falletta and the Buffalo Philharmonic have devoted themselves several times to the music of Zoltán Kodály in the 2020s, and that is all to the good. A previous album featured lesser-known works, avoiding the ubiquitous Háry János Suite; here, listeners get the suite, but there are still two other works they may not know. The Háry János Suite easily holds its own with the many others on the market; Falletta brings out the full palette of orchestral sounds in this hugely colorful work, and the Buffalo Philharmonic's percussion section delivers in the big battery the composer calls for. However, the other two works will perhaps be of greater interest to Kodály lovers. The tone poem Nyári este ("Summer Evening") is an early work from 1906 (it was revised in 1929-1930), and the Symphony in C major, completed in 1961, is a late one, but Kodály's basic folk-inflected neoclassic language runs through the whole. Nyári este is a lovely Hungarian take on the common turn-of-the-century summer idyll genre, while the Symphony, dedicated to the memory of Arturo Toscanini, would have had a marvelous lightness in that conductor's hands but also fares well in Falletta's. Naxos achieves unusually good sound at Buffalo's Kleinhans Hll on a release that is a must for Kodály fans.
