In a move to beat bootleggers to the punch, Pearl Jam decided to release each of their 2000 American concert performances in a series of inexpensive double-CD sets. The August 27th concert recorded in Saratoga, NY, strikes a nice balance between their more raucous songs and the darker, more introspective numbers. The moody "Daughter" spins into a psychedelic jam including snippets of the Velvet Underground's "Beginning to See the Light," their own "W.M.A.," and "It's OK" by Dead Moon thrown in. The pace of the raw punk power of "Lukin" is offset by the dreamlike quality of "Wishlist." Die-hard fans were treated to the concert rarity "Slight of Hand" to start off the second set, and the interesting choice of covering the La's "Timeless Melody" proves to be a good one as the band treats it with an honest reverence. The mumbling rambler "Leatherman" leads into a quick four-song set, beginning with a racing version of "Porch" complete with stolen licks from Hendrix's "Voodoo Chile." Eddie Vedder's precious ukulele-only "Soon Forget" is interrupted by the audience's inability to clap in time, but his second run through gets it right. A truly inspired version of "Black" (one of the best in this concert series) precedes "Yellow Ledbetter" which incorporates a long segment of Led Zeppelin's "Nobody's Fault But Mine" courtesy of guitarist Mike McCready. All in all, a very enjoyable recording with a few spectacular highlights, enjoyable for fans and casual listeners alike.
