A video voyage to the fascinating country of the Goldberg Variations by Bach...

On the 9th October, Alexandre Tharaud will publish his version of the Goldberg Variations. The work was composed for harpsichord by Bach at around 1740, and constitutes the final part of his Clavier-Übung. This masterwork shaped the theme and form of these variations. The piece is mostly a wild richness of forms, in terms of harmony, rhythm, expression, and technical refinement, which are all based on an incomparable contrapuntal technique. The soloists that have attacked this veritable Everest are obviously in their legions. From the harpsichord, to the piano, to the organ, every musician has their favourite instrument for the challenge, as attempted by an ocean of performers including Wanda Landowska, Glenn Gould, Ralph Kirkpatrick, Gustav Leonhardt, Wilhelm Kempff, Karl Richter, Alan Curtis, Trevor Pinnock, András Schiff, Scott Ross, Kenneth Gilbert, Ton Koopman, Zhu Xiao-Mei, Pierre Hantaï, Blandine Verlet, Christophe Rousset, Angela Hewitt, Murray Perahia, Céline Frisch, Andreas Staier, Nicholas Angelich, Bob Van Asperen, Rosalyn Tureck, Claudio Arrau, Alexis Weissenberg, Grigory Sokolov, Daniel Barenboim and Keith Jarrett! Even though the amount of recordings is numerous, the videos dedicated to Goldberg are rather rare. A little flourish all the same with Tharaud, Gould, Schiff, Barenboim, Hantaï, Angelich and Xiao-Mei:
