Crooning ‘80s-style electro from Erol Alkan’s latest prodigy

Early fans were already well aware that he would be one of the first breakout stars of 2015, and now, with the release of his first album, they are about to be proved right. Hailing from London, Ghost Culture is a slick young artist who has recently been picked up by Erol Alkan’s label Phantasy Sound, contrasting his tender vocals with clinical electro production. With much in common with established label mates Connan Mockasin and Daniel Avery, Erol Alkan has said of the release: “This first album is just the tip of the iceberg. There's so much amazing music coming out of him.” This eponymous debut effort sees Ghost Culture go on a creative journey through a kaleidoscopic universe that he explores far beyond electro. His carefully-constructed sonic structures are reminiscent of the oddities of Arthur Russell as well as the New Wave sounds of Depeche Mode and New Order; and then there’s that voice, combining a studied nonchalance with the charm of a real crooner as he spins dreamy stories which give the album its heartfelt edge. Each listen reveals more layers to this complex album, which we could probably spend all day talking about.
