Tristen
Chicagoland native Tristen Gaspadarek is a Nashville-based singer/songwriter who records and performs smartly crafted indie pop under the name Tristen. Since emerging in the early 2010s, her music has evolved in various directions from the folk strains of 2011's Charlatans at the Garden Gate to the classy synth pop of 2013's Caves and the jangling indie pop of 2017's Sneaker Waves. After focusing on singles for several years Tristen returned in 2021 with her fifth LP, Aquatic Flowers.
Inspired by Beatles songs on oldies radio and encouraged by her musician father, Tristen began experimenting with music at a young age, recording at home and playing at local coffeehouses. After graduating from De Paul University, she relocated to Nashville to further pursue a career in music. In 2009, she compiled a CD of her home recordings titled Teardrops and Lollipops, which she sold at shows in unique hand-sewn sleeves. In early 2011, she released a more definitive debut called Charlatans at the Garden Gate, an album of smartly written indie pop with strains of folk and Americana. The album was well received, earning praise from NPR, Paste Magazine, and Spin. She went on tour with established acts like Justin Townes Earle and Ezra Furman & the Harpoons before heading back to Nashville to record her follow-up.
Lacking a record label, Tristen opted to crowd-fund her next LP. The resulting release was 2013's Caves, an eloquently made, synth-driven album and stylistic left turn for Tristen. Like its predecessor Charlatans, Caves was also named Best Local Album in 2013 by the Nashville Scene Critics Poll. After touring in support of Caves, Tristen hit the road again as part of Jenny Lewis' backing band, and in 2016 she published a book of poetry, Saturnine. Her next album, 2017's Sneaker Waves dialed back on the electronic elements of its predecessor in favor of smartly-written guitar pop with strong hooks. A handful of smaller releases including the 2019 holiday EP Tristen Decks the Halls and the excellent 2020 single "Can't Walk That Back" marked Tristen's output heading into the next decade. Her fifth album, Aquatic Flowers, arrived in 2021 on Portland indie Mama Bird Recording Co.
