Kenny Broberg

Pianist Kenny Broberg has won medals at top piano events, including the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition and the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Russia. He is part of the roster of the Steinway & Sons label. The pianist was born Kenneth Broberg in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on August 2, 1993. He has used the name Kenny professionally. Intrigued by classical music due to an Italian-American grandfather's enjoyment of The Three Tenors, he took up the piano at age six and studied for some years with Joseph Zins in St. Paul, Minnesota. In high school, he played baseball and hockey, and he continues to follow those sports, sometimes even streaming games in concert dressing rooms. Broberg attended the University of Houston, where he studied with Nancy Weems and earned a bachelor's degree in 2016. He won the school's concerto competition in 2012. Broberg then enrolled in the master's program at Park University in Missouri, studying with former Van Cliburn Piano Competition gold medal winner Stanislav Ioudenitch. Broberg won several more prizes around the U.S. and beyond, scoring a major breakthrough when he took the silver medal at the Fifteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2017. His recording debut came when his Cliburn competition performances were released by the Decca Gold label that year. He followed up the Cliburn honor with a bronze medal at the XVI International Tchaikovsky Competition in Russia, and he also took the American Pianists Association award in 2021. Broberg has appeared with orchestras in several American cities and beyond, with the Sydney Symphony in Australia and England's Royal Philharmonic, under such conductors as Leonard Slatkin, Vasily Petrenko, and Kent Nagano. He has been heard on National Public Radio, where he played an original composition called Barcarolle, on WQXR radio in New York, and on Australia's ABC radio network. A bonus associated with Broberg's American Pianists Association Award was a contract with the Steinway & Sons label, where he released an album of sonatas by Rachmaninov, Scriabin, and Nikolay Medtner, in 2023. He is deputy professor at the Reina Sofía School of Music in Madrid, Spain.
