Jerry Wayne

b. 1921, Buffalo, New York, USA. An actor and singer who had several US chart entries in the late 40s, including ‘A Little Bird Told Me’ (with Janette Davis), ‘Room Full Of Roses’, ‘You Call Everybody Darling’, and the 1948 US number 1 with the Ken Griffin and Hal Cotton arrangement of the German tune, ‘You Can’t Be True, Dear’ (‘Du Kannst Nicht Treu Sein’). Wayne also played the role of Sky Masterson in the London production of Frank Loesser’s Guys And Dolls (1953), replaced during the run by Edmund Hockridge. Three years later, Wayne appeared with Jack Hulbert and Cicely Courtneidge in the stage musical Star Maker, and, in 1969, wrote the lyrics to his son Jeff Wayne’s music for the London West End production of Two Cities, based on Charles Dickens’ novel, A Tale Of Two Cities. Father and son pre-dated the 1983 musical, La Cage Aux Folles, by writing a song for the show, entitled ‘The Best Of Times’.
