Chris Renzema

A singer/songwriter who blends contemporary indie folk and rock with a strong Christian message, Chris Renzema makes music that's atmospheric and ethereal. His plaintive vocals and unflinchingly personal lyrics earned him a wide fan base and, following 2018's self-released I'll Be the Branches, he joined the roster of prominent CCM label Centricity. He made his label debut with 2020's Let the Ground Rest followed a year later by the introspective and passionate Get Out of the Way of Your Own Heart. A series of 2023 singles like "Faith!?" and "God and Prozac" examined Renzema's evolving relationship with faith. Chris Renzema was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1995. He grew up as a regular churchgoer and a committed Christian, and when he was in high school he began playing guitar and writing songs as a way of expressing his inner feelings and his faith. Influenced by '70s folk, contemporary indie singer/songwriters, adventurous Christian artists like John Mark McMillan, and Wilco (he often cites them as his favorite band), Renzema was soon performing at his local church, and after a mission trip to Guatemala after he graduated from high school, he decided it was time to document some of his work. Saving up money from his part-time jobs, Renzema recorded his debut EP, 2014's Age to Age, in just 19 hours. The following year, he moved to Nashville, where he worked odd jobs while trying to make his way into the music business. Renzema followed the EP with a single, "Son of God," in 2017, but he found his first real success with his first full-length album, 2018's I'll Be the Branches. The self-produced, self-released album found traction online, thanks to widely streamed songs like "How to Be Yours," "I Don't Wanna Go," and "Found." In the wake of the album's success, the Christian label Centricity Music signed Renzema to a recording contract. His follow-up album, Let the Ground Rest, was released in April 2020 and dealt with themes of mental health, anxiety, and taking solace in God. Unable to tour due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Renzema bought hundreds of gift cards from independent coffee shops in markets where he had been scheduled to play, telling his followers on social media, "I decided that I want to buy you a cup of coffee for when this is all over." It was a goodwill gesture typical of this artist whose devotion to his fans matched that of his faith. Over the next year Renzema entered a prolific period, releasing a pair of 2021 EPs, Let The Ground Rest B-Sides and Hope or Nostalgia Live, as well as his third full-length, the affirmational and heartfelt Get Out of the Way of Your Own Heart. Along the way he was nominated for New Artist of the Year at the Dove Awards. Renzema continued to unpack his relationship with faith on the 2023 singles "Faith!?" and "God and Prozac."
