Anderson East
Anderson East walks the line separating throwback rock & roll and soul within the boundaries of Americana. Graced with a gravelly voice equally suited for punchy pop and introspective folk, East released a pair of albums on his own at the dawn of the 2010s before making the leap to the majors with 2015's Delilah. He received some attention for that record, but it was 2018's Encore that got him onto the Billboard charts and snagged him a Grammy nomination for Best American Roots Performance in 2018 for "All on My Mind." He capitalized on that momentum with 2021's moody, soulful Maybe We Never Die.
Anderson East was born Michael Anderson in 1988 in Athens, Alabama, a small town not far from Huntsville. His grandfather was a Baptist preacher, and gospel music was favored at home. There wasn't much pop or rock in his household, so he tended to latch on to whatever he heard and analyze it carefully, trying to make sense of the bits and pieces of sound that comprised Led Zeppelin or Michael Jackson. When he was ten, East began learning how to play guitar, but while his peers taught themselves by playing covers, he found that frustrating and instead focused on writing and performing his own songs. By the time he was in seventh grade, he had formed a band with his friends and made his stage debut performing at a school talent show. After high school, he attended Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, with his sights set on becoming a music engineer. However, his love of performing was too strong, and after graduating he moved to Nashville.
By 2009, East had turned professional and was performing with his band the Deputies and using his birth name Mike Anderson. That year, he released his first album, Closing Credits for a Fire, under the latter moniker. A year later, he had changed his stage name to Anderson East and released an EP, Fire Demos. He traveled to Los Angeles to record his next album, 2012's Flowers of the Broken Hearted, which included backing from studio aces Waddy Wachtel, Rob Wasserman, and Don Heffington.
As word of mouth spread about him and his music, East crossed paths with producer Dave Cobb, who was at the controls for critically acclaimed albums by Sturgill Simpson and Jason Isbell. When Cobb launched his own label, Low Country Sound, distributed by Elektra Records, East was brought on board, and his major-label debut, Delilah, was released in July 2015. Delilah peaked at two on Billboard's Heat Seekers chart, with "Satisfy Me" reaching 18 on its AAA chart. In August 2017, East issued "All on My Mind," the first single from his second album, the Cobb-produced Encore. Arriving in January 2018, Encore cracked the Top 50 of the Billboard 200 and landed at number three on the Folk Albums chart. He also picked up his first Grammy Award nomination for Best American Roots Performance for "All on My Mind."
East released his first live album, Alive in Tennessee, in May 2019. Returning to the studio with co-producers Dave Cobb and Philip Towns, he began work on his fourth album, with the moody first single "Madelyn" seeing release in early 2021. Later that year, Cobb's Low Country Sound issued the full-length Maybe We Never Die.
