The tragic fate of operatic lovelorn characters has been a natural launching point in programming recitals for live performances and recordings for singers ranging from wily veterans to those attempting to make a name for themselves. Here, soprano Ekaterina Siurina, an established singer with a growing presence on international stages, offers a program of well-known arias, several of which are more common in this setting than encountered as part of a full opera production. She is backed by Lithuania's Kaunas City Symphony Orchestra and its principal conductor, Constantine Orbelian, who has led this orchestra to international prominence. Siurina kicks off the program with "Mesicku na nebi hlubokén" ("Song to the Moon") from Dvořák's Rusalka, which (in English) contains the album's titular line, "Kde je můj milý?" ("Where is my beloved?"). She delivers a clear, emotional reading of the tragedy that befalls the water nymph with sympathetic backing from the orchestra, which she receives throughout. The album wouldn't be complete without the likes of Puccini and Verdi, the latter of which is represented by a somewhat lesser-known aria from Simon Boccanegra (at least, in regard to the many other choices from this prodigious composer). The closing pieces by Tchaikovsky offer a chance for Siurina to sing in her native tongue, and she is superb. The drama and power required to pull off this recital are no doubt exhausting, but it would not have been too much to ask to include a couple more arias to bulk up the program. With the final "Tatiana's Letter Scene" from Eugene Onegin making up more than a quarter of the album's runtime, a few more items would give listeners more to consider and no doubt enjoy, as Siurina's outing is very well sung with good backing from Orbelian and his Kaunas group.
