At the end of the 90s, Jason Lytle, Gradaddy’s leader, created his band’s second album with the Y2K glitch in mind (the predicted havoc that would ensue when the clocks turned 12 on 01/01/2000). Of course, the computers didn’t crash. And The Sophtware Slump became Grandaddy’s best hit, as well as a milestone in American indie pop. Like Ziggy Stardust from the post-grunge years. In 2020, The Sophtware Slump’s 20-year celebration takes the album full circle. Spending lockdown at home in Spring, Lytle re-recorded this album almost fully by himself, singing at the piano. It’s the fruit of coronavirus. On the original versions, the piano is surrounded by guitars, drums and a lot of retro-futuristic space sounds. The music sounds like it’s floating at the edge of a black hole. It comes back down to earth here, but Jason Lytle’s head is still in the sky. The stripped-back versions bring the likes of Daniel Johnston or Sparklehorse to mind. They’re fragile and melancholic, though they still hold a kind of innocence. There’s a numbed atmosphere. The feeling of being somewhere else. As a man who loves vintage analogue synthesizers, Lytle sure knows how to work the piano. For the ultimate psychedelic experience, you can listen to the original and the piano version at the same time. © Stéphane Deschamps/Qobuz
