By 1996, De La Soul had been firmly established in the American rap imagination for around seven years. Stakes is High is their fourth album, marking a turning point in their music, a clear desire to break away from their cool image and to melt, a little, into the darkness that was enveloping New York hip-hop. The trio tuned into their city, dismissing long-time producer and mentor Prince Paul to make the beats themselves, notably through the expert hands of Maseo, leaving Posdnuos and Trugoy to write and rap the bulk of the lyrics. The members of De La Soul keep their playful spirit; they can always be heard having fun composing crazy interludes, while also expressing their contempt for the evolution of American rap. Stakes Is High is a fabulous album, but also the work of disillusioned artists who refuse to resist. They advocate a kind of hedonism rendered especially poignant in its deliberate insouciance towards heavy fatalistic themes.
