In March of 2023 with the album Life & Fire, Israeli pianist Omer Klein celebrated the ten year anniversary of the trio he forms with Haggai Cohen-Milo and Amir Bresler through powerfully lyrical music, full of rhythm and colour. He returns at the end of the year with a much more introspective project, this time built around Christmas and its repertoire of traditional songs. Alone at the piano, staying as close as possible to the melody, avoiding misplaced virtuosity or over-complexification of harmony, Omer Klein revisits a number of the genre’s great classics (“The Christmas Song”, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”) with great humility and sensitivity, as well as a number of jazz hits (“For All We Know”), adorning the record with a series of Bach chorales drawn from cantatas and his famous Christmas Oratorio. Compiled with profoundness, the music of this atypical and ultimately quite personal record dives without mawkishness into the heart of Christmas’s unique spirituality.
