This recording inaugurates a major new series from the Somm label in cooperation with the Bruckner Society of America and audio restoration engineer Lani Spahr, who has done work on similar releases of music by other composers from Somm in the past. The title Bruckner from the Archives has its usual meaning; these are archival recordings dating back as far as 1944 in the case of the Three Pieces for Orchestra and March in D minor performed by the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. The two symphonies are both from rare radio aircheck recordings; the Symphony in F minor, WAB 99, of 1863 (the one sometimes known as the Symphony No. 00), comes from an unspecified aircheck in 1974, while the Symphony No. 1 in C minor, WAB 101 (in its early "Linz" version), is from a Bavarian Radio broadcast of 1959; it is a fine reading by the Bavarian Radio Symphony, conducted by Eugen Jochum, and it holds up well even today. The sound in all cases is remarkably clear, especially given the challenges of recording Bruckner, and while certainly credit must go to Spahr, one also notes the skills of the original engineers. This is an archive in a second sense as well; as the reader will have noticed, these are obscure Bruckner pieces from the composer's student years. The String Quartet in C minor, WAB 111, of 1862, is an exercise in which it is very hard to hear any trace of the mature composer; it is an essay mixing aspects of Schumann and Haydn, and certainly pleasant to hear. In all the other works on the double album, however, there are hints of the later Bruckner. Lovers of both Bruckner and the history of mid-20th century recordings will find much to interest them here.
